Re:Route URBAN TRANSPORT People need transportation because the places they go on a daily basis are too far away to walk. The two main places that people travel between everyday are “Home” and “Work.” Zoning urban environments in a manner that creates multiple urban centers instead of one mega-center provides opportunities for people to live closer to where they work, inherently reducing their dependence on transportation. Urban environments should look more homogeneous like Jackson Pollock’s Convergence rather than the rigid, grid like pattern of Piet Mondrian’s Composition A. Transportation gets clogged and congested because existing zoning causes many people to travel to the same area during the same time of day. If “Home” and “Work” were more evenly mixed, the frequency of traffic jams would resemble waves as opposed to a concentrated spike. When people need to use urban transportation, public transportation should be the preferred option. It should offer affordability, accessibility, a convenient schedule, and comfortable, clean, engaging space. |
